Austria and Tyrol are home to a number of well-known places of pilgrimage that are well worth a visit. The Tyrolean pilgrimage churches, in particular, are unrivalled in terms of art history and culture. Above all, it is the Marian pilgrimage sites, such as Absam, that have a special appeal for people. Whether in search of God or for other reasons, pilgrimages are becoming increasingly popular. Encounters and exchanges, taking time to pause and slow down, play an important role on a spiritual journey.
However, a distinction must be made between a pilgrimage and a walk. What does one do on a walk, and what on a pilgrimage? On a pilgrimage, one usually sets out on foot on a long journey to a specific destination. During the hike, one tries to focus on the purpose of one’s pilgrimage. Pilgrimage routes in Tyrol
- The Way of St James, a pilgrimage route that leads all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
- The Romedius Pilgrimage Route is slightly shorter, but a little more challenging. It starts right in the Hall-Wattens region and leads to the San Romedio pilgrimage site in Trentino.
- The Petrus Canisius Pilgrimage – a one-day pilgrimage from Hall to Innsbruck. These walks are often undertaken in the company of a priest and feature spiritual reflections.
- The Contemplative Trail leads from Absam to Gnadenwald and on to St Martin’s Monastery. With its nine stations, it invites you to find peace and take a moment to reflect.
Depending on the pilgrimage route, pilgrimage is just as suitable for beginners as it is for experienced pilgrims.
A pilgrimage, on the other hand, places much greater emphasis on the Christian religious aspect. Together with family or a group, you travel to places of pilgrimage to pray to God or specific saints.
