Schloss Aschach

South of Volders, the Aschach Castle rises on a hill.

The estate was first documented in 1311 under the ownership of Jakob von Volders (Jakob der Volrer). It consisted of a "four-cornered tower" and lower agricultural buildings. During the Bavarian invasion in 1413, Aschach was burned down. In 1470, this dominion came into the possession of the Füerer family (Furrer). In 1499, Augustin Fuerer von Aschach was appointed judge for the knight Florian Waldauf, who had rebuilt the Rettenberg Castle in Kolsassberg in 1492. Thus, the Aschach estate became a place of jurisdiction with a prison and torture chamber.

In 1574, Aschach Castle came into the hands of Ernst von Rauchenberg. He rebuilt the castle in its today’s preserved form by 1586. During this time, the chapel was also constructed. Ernst von Rauchenberg was the chief chamberlain of Philippine Welser and tutor to her two sons from her unequal marriage to Archduke Ferdinand II. With her two sons Andreas and Karl, they were said to have spent time in Aschach on various amusements and deer hunts.

The subsequent owners of the castle were the von Rauchenberg family (1575) and the Buchheim family (1580), the Schenk family (1591 to 1626), and until 1685, the Rotenbucher family. From 1685 to 1826, the castle belonged to the Remich family, from 1834 to 1872 to the Arnold family (owners of the former Gasthof Post), and from 1899 to 1931 to the Walter family. In 1931, the von Altenburger family was finally able to acquire the Aschach Castle, which had suffered greatly from the frequent changes of ownership. In 2004, this estate was sold to the Fluckinger family (sole owners since 2009). In 2012, the castle was extensively restored and is now used privately.
