Opening times for the Hall Farmers’ Market:
Every Saturday from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm
Upper Town Square, Hall in Tirol (area between the Stubenhaus and the chemist’s)
Every Saturday, goods sourced from family-run farms are on sale at the red market stalls on the Upper Town Square: fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy products, homemade bread, jams and honey, as well as fish, meat, bacon and sausage specialities, and flowers. You can buy fresh produce grown in local fields and gardens or produced locally.
A stroll through the market has a certain rustic charm: walking under the open sky rather than under neon lights in enclosed spaces; regional, healthy delicacies rather than chemically treated produce from distant lands; familiar faces and friendly conversation rather than anonymous customer service. Visitors experience the atmosphere of the town with all their senses: hearing, smelling, seeing and feeling.
Hall in Tirol Market Tradition: A tradition stretching back more than 700 years
The market bustle is not a modern phenomenon, but rather the revival of a centuries-old tradition. The town of Hall in Tyrol looks back on a long history as one of the region’s most important market towns and has held market rights since the 1280s. Initially, trade centred mainly on local foodstuffs to supply the miners and the ever-growing population. When the people of Hall were granted the right to hold two additional annual fairs, the town’s importance as a market centre grew beyond the region. This attracted large numbers of traders from outside the town, where practically everything was on offer – from food to luxury goods – that the merchants of Hall or ordinary citizens might need. However, the golden age of the Hall annual fairs came to an end in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Almost 30 years ago now, people rediscovered the importance of Hall as a market town and launched the Hall Farmers’ Market. At the time, this was done to revitalise the town centre and as a counter-movement to the shopping centres, which were drawing people out of the towns and into the affluent suburbs at a breakneck pace. The fact that a general trend towards regionality and authenticity has since emerged in response to globalisation and its consequences further enhances the market’s appeal. ‘Back to nature and to our roots’ is the motto of a whole new target group that favours unique and natural products.
