The Giant and his Chambers of Wonders
In 1995, multimedia artist André Heller created a world of wonders to mark Swarovski’s centenary. As the central theme, Heller designed the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in the shape of a giant. And he devised the story of the giant, who had set out to experience the world with all its treasures and wonders. Armed with this knowledge, the giant settled down in Wattens in Tyrol and has been ‘watching over’ his chambers of wonders ever since.
The original concept behind these chambers of wonders is based on the historic cabinet of curiosities at Ambras Castle, which, in the 16th century, sought to encompass the entire body of knowledge of its time as a universal collection. In the Wunderkammern, much like in an art exhibition, internationally and nationally renowned artists, designers and architects interpret crystal in their own unique way. The art installations crafted from this sparkling material are unique spatial and experiential concepts.
Welcome to a magical world that unfolds as you enter the Swarovski Crystal Worlds through the giant’s head...
The Garden at Swarovski Crystal Worlds
At the heart of the new garden is the Crystal Cloud, designed by Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot. This monumental installation hovers above the black mirror-like water and invites visitors to pause for a moment. Covering an area of around 1,400 square metres, this mystical masterpiece is the largest of its kind in the world. The Crystal Cloud consists of more than 800,000 hand-set Swarovski crystals. A sloping path leads visitors directly to the mirror-like water, in which the light from the crystals is captured like stars in the night sky – even in broad daylight.
The crystalline garden complements the range of underground chambers of wonders and the many special children’s tours and workshops centred around the Crystal Studio.
The renowned architectural firm Snøhetta has designed a play tower, situated in the southern part of the garden, which offers a wide variety of play experiences across four levels and creates a very special spatial experience. These levels are further connected by a vertical climbing net – the only one of its kind – which can be climbed freely at a height of just under 14 metres. A range of activities are on offer: from climbing, swinging and sliding to the sensation of floating.
The façade of the play tower consists of 160 crystalline facets, no two of which are alike. The panels are printed with an innovative pattern comprising millions of tiny motifs drawn from the history of Swarovski. A view from the inside out is possible at all times, and the activities taking place inside are also visible from the outside. In the evening, the structure appears as a spectacular luminous structure.
The area for children of all ages is complemented by an innovative outdoor play landscape. A freely shaped topography made of steel and wood offers children countless opportunities for play. Not only are familiar activities on offer here, but children also have the opportunity to discover new games and forms of movement.

An abstract retail landscape along a winding river
The shop entrance, designed by Snøhetta, is presented as a fascinating light and sound installation. Several kilometres of luminous fibres form a spiral tunnel that guides visitors into the Swarovski store. An interactive sound installation further expands the space through its acoustic dimension.
The crystalline shopping experience itself features areas for product and brand presentations and opens out onto the garden. The redesign, conceived by the master planners s_o_s architekten, is inspired by the image of a meandering river within an artificial landscape. The store is one of the largest in the world and boasts a unique design – special retail units and large display cabinets were designed exclusively for Swarovski Kristallwelten. Targeted lighting further enhances the atmosphere, creating different moods within the space.
