Sagen via ferrata. On the Glungezer

In 2021, the Hall in Tirol Alpine Club refurbished the via ferrata on the Glungezer along the existing route and significantly extended it. In future, the via ferrata is also to be used as a teaching, learning and training route. A wide range of difficulty levels has been incorporated into the boulder terrain – from easy (‘Category A’) to difficult (‘Category C’), all types of challenges are included, such as short and long steep ascents, ridge intersections, chimney passages and even a rope bridge.
At the crux, the ‘Giant’s Tooth’ (B/C), a secured bypass (A/B) was installed in June 2025 for those who prefer a less challenging route.

The via ferrata starts above Lake Zirbensee, and the 400-metre ascent takes a total of 2.5 hours. Just 10 minutes from the finish is the Glungezerhütte, which is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat and a rest!

TIP: If you’re planning a tour on the via ferrata, it’s advisable to set off in the morning. We recommend setting off by 11:00 so that you can finish the trip in time for the last lift down to the valley.

To do justice to the rich treasure trove of legends surrounding the Glungezer, notable spots have been named after terms from the legend of the ‘Glungezer Giant’. The route begins with a climbing practice wall, after which you come to various sections such as the ‘King’s Balcony’, the ‘Princess’s Crown’ or the ‘Magic Wall’.
