Rich salt deposits allowed the town to flourish as early as the 13th century. When in the 15th century the princely mint from Meran in South Tyrol was moved to Hall, the importance of the town grew further. In the year 1486, the first thaler in the world was minted in Hall.

At the center of the old town is one of the most beautiful squares in Austria, the Upper Town Square. Noteworthy are the late Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas, the town hall, and the Magdalene Chapel.
