Red, round, crisp: The Radish Festival in Hall in Tyrol
A festival – just to celebrate the radish? A bit of an overreaction, don’t you think? Not at all, when you’ve got Austria’s largest radish-growing region right on your doorstep and, like us, are absolutely smitten with this little, red, round vegetable.
The Radish Festival in Hall traditionally heralds the arrival of spring and the start of the fresh vegetable season, as these red tubers are the first signs of spring in local vegetable growing.

On Saturday at 10 am, Hall’s old town will be transformed into a festive stage: The brass band and the young Schuhplattler dancers from Thaur, together with the local vegetable growers, will make their way from Stiftsplatz via the Oberer Stadtplatz to the town hall. This colourful procession will be accompanied by historic Massey Ferguson vintage tractors and lovingly decorated radish floats. The official opening will be performed by the mayors of Hall and Thaur with the traditional tapping of the free beer barrel, actively supported by Radish Princess Anna.
What’s on the menu at the Radish Festival?
The farmers of Thaur will be serving up a selection of spring delicacies. Alongside radish burgers and radish soup, there will be traditional Kiachl and tempting, homemade cakes. In addition, Tiroler Biopilze will be showcasing further high-quality culinary specialities from the region. A particular highlight is the giant radish loaf from Therese Mölk’s bakery: Baked in XXL tins, the loaf is delivered by lorry and topped on site by volunteers from the Thaur Social Association with ‘Bio-von-Berg’ butter, fresh radishes and cress. The proceeds from the sale go directly to people and families in need.

Music at the Haller Radish Festival
The morning gets off to a musical start with a mix of lively brass band music from the Thaur Brass Band and various dance performances by the Jungschuhplattler group. From 1 pm, the Blechpatrioten from Rum will take centre stage. Performing as the original line-up of ‘Die kleinen Egerländer’, the eight musicians will entertain the audience until 4 pm with their own Bohemian-Moravian compositions, timeless classics, polkas, waltzes and well-known pop hits.
