A 32 per cent gradient at Bettelwurfeck, 680 metres of elevation gain and a route length of 5.2 kilometres – but behind the bare figures of the Halltalexpress lies one thing above all else: the challenge of reaching the finish line at the end of the Halltal valley. And because it’s more fun together, the Halltalexpress has always been a team competition for runners and cyclists of all abilities.

In principle, this edition of the Halltalexpress will also be a race for cyclists and runners, with victory at stake. But the Halltalexpress is so much more than that: the fans lining the route through the Halltal make no distinction between professionals and amateur athletes. Even if you have to push your bike for part of the route, or walk briefly instead of running, it doesn’t dampen the atmosphere in the slightest. At Bettelwurfeck, many a participant has spoken of getting ‘goosebumps’ when the spectators, with their shouts and applause, carried the athletes towards the finish line at the Herrenhäuser – and will do so again this year.

Take advantage of the discounted early bird registration (€20 per participant) at www.halltalexpress.at; late registrations on race day are only possible between 8.00 and 9.00 am. As the number of participants is limited to 250, advance registration is recommended. The race starts at 10.30 am; from 12.00 pm, the prize-giving ceremony and after-race party will take place at the Alpengasthof St. Magdalena, which, in addition to the prize-giving at 2.00 pm, will also offer food, drink and musical entertainment.

However, hikers who prefer to take things at a more leisurely pace can not only enjoy the race, but also make the most of their day in the Halltal valley with a wonderful hike through the countryside. After all, in Austria’s largest nature park, adventure awaits at every turn. The Karwendel, with its rugged limestone cliffs, fascinating vegetation and emerald-green streams, immediately captivates visitors. Hiking through the natural and cultural landscape of the Halltal valley, with its centuries-old salt mining tradition, is a unique experience. Afterwards, the Alpengasthof St. Magdalena invites you to stop off and linger over music, food and drink.
