TULFES – The total solar eclipse on Wednesday 12 August 2026 will take place mainly over Greenland, Iceland and Spain, but can also be observed very clearly in parts of Tyrol.
The view of the partial solar eclipse from the viewing area at the Tulfein mountain station on the Glungezer is particularly good. For this reason, weather permitting, both sections of the Glungezerbahn will run until 10 pm on 12 August 2026 (cancelled in the event of bad weather). Members of the Heiligkreuz Astronomy Club will also be on site at the viewing area near the Tulfein mountain station. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the partial solar eclipse through telescopes. “At Tulfein, the solar eclipse can be seen clearly through a telescope fitted with special solar filters,” explains Rainer Eisendle from the Heiligkreuz Astronomy Club. In Tyrol, the maximum degree of solar coverage is around 89 per cent. In German-speaking regions, the eclipse will be visible as a deep partial solar eclipse from around 6.30 pm until sunset. If available, visitors are advised to bring solar eclipse glasses with them. The Glungezerbahn is open until 10.00 pm in fine weather, as well as every Tuesday during the mountain summer season.
