The legendary Middle Ages also included moments of joy, which are brought back to life at the ‘Freudenfeuer’: from 7 to 9 October 2022, Hall in Tirol will be celebrating those bright and colourful times.

‘Bonfires’ were the precursors to our town festivals. They were festivities more or less organised by the town to mark special occasions. During these celebrations, a fire was actually lit in a wooden barrel, usually in the Upper Town Square. Music was played and there was exuberant dancing. Wine was served and sweets were handed out. Around 1500, the latter was still something of a rarity.

Campsites, historical techniques and delicacies from days gone by

As well as the ‘bonfire’ on the Upper Town Square, the three-day event in Hall has much more to offer: in the tent camp in the Stiftsgarten, groups of performers re-enact everyday life from the past in authentically reconstructed tents. They wear period costumes and use objects from that era. Craftspeople demonstrate their skills using traditional techniques. Visitors can learn about the period and marvel at numerous demonstrations. For the little ones, there is a special children’s programme with plenty of fun and games in the Altstadtpark. This allows them to experience the world of children in the Middle Ages.

Music and dance are as much a part of the festival today as they were back then: music and dance groups perform at various points throughout the event. Musicians also play all over the old town.

In the historic market town of Hall, a medieval market is a must. The stalls offer spices, herbs, healing stones, jewellery, incense, clothing and toys for little knights and damsels.

The best archer is sought at the historic archery range. The prize is a travelling archer’s chain. The last archer to take a shot receives the ‘golden sausage’!

The highlight of the festival is the ‘bonfire’ on Saturday evening.
On the Upper Town Square, just as in days long past, a fire will blaze in a barrel. There will be music and dancing to accompany it. Together with the dance groups, every guest can then have a go at dancing around the ‘Haller Bonfire’.
